Identification of an Intestinal Folate Transporter and the Molecular Basis for Hereditary Folate Malabsorption
Folates are essential nutrients that are required for one-carbon biosynthetic and epigenetic processes. While folates are absorbed in the acidic milieu of the upper small intestine, the underlying absorption mechanism has not been defined. We now report the identification of a human proton-coupled, high-affinity folate transporter that recapitulates properties of folate transport and absorption...
متن کاملAnaemia in Occult Intestinal Malabsorption.
Nine patients are described, four men and five women, aged between 14 and 62 years, who presented with symptoms of severe anaemia. Deficiencies of iron and folic acid were subsequently demonstrated in each case. Although malabsorption was not initially suspected, further investigations showed an abnormally high excretion of faecal fat in seven cases. Anaemias which are ;unexplained' or which sh...
متن کاملSubepithelial collagen in intestinal malabsorption.
Intestinal biopsies from 146 patients with adult coeliac disease and 13 patients with intestinal villous atrophy of different aetiology were assessed for the presence of subepithelial collagen and compared with a group of 20 control subjects. Subepithelial collagen was a common and non-specific finding observed in intestinal biopsies from patients suffering from adult coeliac disease (36%) and ...
متن کاملPancytopenia and folate deficiency in alcoholics.
Three alcoholic patients are reported who presented with pancytopenia and macrocytosis due to acute folate deficiency. While folate deficiency is a common finding in alcohol abusers due to abnormalities in diet, intestinal absorption, internal metabolism and excretion, this life-threatening complication has not been well documented.
متن کاملIntestinal malabsorption in cystic fibrosis.
An oral solution containing lactulose and L-rhamnose was administered to six patients with cystic fibrosis. Intestinal absorption of both sugars was assessed by measurement of their urinary excretion. The lactulose: L-rhamnose excretion ratio was raised, supporting the hypothesis of an intestinal component to the malabsorption of cystic fibrosis.
